Deck the Boughs - Pottery World

4:41 PM PST - 11/11/2008
by: Tinka Davi

Bring the warm woods and soft evergreens of nature into your home this season, where an au natural look is sharing the spotlight with the traditional glitter and glam of the holidays.

The back-to nature trend brings the forest – and a few of its charming critters – indoors for the winter season and it’s a move that blends beautifully with almost any décor. Natural elements become holiday treasures that are perfect for a family or game room, breakfast area or a Tahoe retreat. An outdoor living room or kitchen is another ideal spot especially when the tree is placed near a slider or picture window so it can be viewed from inside the home.

Nature’s beauty along with traditional Christmas sparkle are reflected in several theme trees at Pottery World in Rocklin, which has become a virtual winter wonderland of holiday ideas and keepsakes.

In one tree, quail, pinecones, winterberries and other natural elements create a winter theme that’s enhanced with a few subtle-toned glass ornaments, clear globes with deer and birds inside, sparkling lights and ribbon. A wise owl tops the tree, while a huggable bear cub sits nearby.

For those who love a more traditional look, Pottery World shows a tree with a blend of nature and glitter. It’s festooned with flowers – red silk poinsettias and roses – red glass ornaments, a few purple ornaments for accent and delicate porcelain angels and dolls.

Red poinsettias accent another tree, which is packed with embellished ornaments and topped with a large spray of winterberries. A pair of reindeer and a bird in a cage complete the vignette.

For a whimsical touch – or a small space – an upside down tree is certain to surprise and delight anyone. It’s trimmed with snowmen, Santas, birds with long tail feathers and other “eye candy.” A cheery snowman tops the tree, while a large, red bagful of goodies is underneath.

Also certain to cause a smile is a tree full of Santas of various styles, shapes and sizes sitting in a tall vase on an end table.

The unique selection of ornaments at Pottery World ranges from whimsical to glittery to religious. Start a collection or add to one with choices that include Christopher Radko’s exquisitely detailed glass ornaments, Victorian- style Father Christmas figures, birds or animals.

Lights for Christmas trees also are varied. For a retro look, strings of lights in bold colors are reminiscent of the ‘50s and ‘60s, while imitation candles that clip onto branches with flickering “flames” hearken back to an era when real candles were used on fresh-cut evergreens.

For back-to-nature décor or traditional holiday glitter, Pottery World offers a host of fabulous ideas, decorations, greenery and florals to deck the halls in Christmas splendor.

Pottery World is located at 4419 Granite Drive, Rocklin. 916-624-8080, potteryworld.com.
