An engineering graduate with an entrepreneurial spirit, Andrew Ritchie observed a design for a fledgling folding bike company and thought, “I can do this better.” From his bedroom window overlooking the Brompton Oratory in South Kensington, London, Ritchie created three prototypes, the beginnings of a new career.
Some thirty-plus years later, Brompton still produces cutting-edge cycles, one of only two major frame manufacturers in the UK. The philosophy hasn’t changed much either – efficient, lightweight, performance bicycles in a convenient folded package.
According to Brompton, their bikes can be folded in a quick 10-20 seconds with a little practice. Once compact, the overall size mirrors that of the wheel and can be carried like a suitcase. And when it’s folded, it stays locked. No projecting pieces or loose parts, just a sturdy but light package for easy transport.
Brompton currently offers three “types” of cycles. The “M Type” utilizes the U-shaped steering wheel the company has incorporated from the outset. Upright with great control, this model is the perfect all around bike for city or country use. The “P Type” features butterfly-like handlebars with multiple positions for the touring cyclist. It also offers ample back storage capacity in the back. The “S Type” is the lightest of the lot with great looks and superior performance.
